Wiki platforms

Wikis are built using frameworks known as wiki platforms. There are several wiki platforms, some of which are free while others have to be paid for. The paid for platforms usually offer a wider range of options or services to its subscribers than the free ones.

Criteria for evaluating which wiki to use

  1. Ease of installation
  2. User accounts (so that your name is automatically attached to all changes you make)
  3. Page change subscriptions by email or RSS
  4. Page history and stored revisions
  5. Document attachments
  6. Page edit locking ( you may not want two people editing a page at the same time, as one will lose their changes
  7. An easy - to remember syntax

Training Exercise

  1. Explore the different wiki platforms listed above (or any other you may come across)
  2. Choose one platform and use it to create a wiki that you will use in your work or during the implementation of your Harambee action plan. Most wiki platforms have an easy-to-follow step-by-step procedure for setting up a wiki.
  3. Congratulations! You have created your own wiki!
  4. Now add some content to your wiki by creating pages and entering information.
  5. When you have added some content, please share your achievement on the Focus network mailing list.
  6. Feel free to invite your colleagues too to visit and edit your wiki.
