Background to the Workshop

A second workshop for Harambee was not originally one of the planned activities for Phase II of the project. It arose from the decision by Hivos, one of Harambee’s funders, not to fund Phase II of the project. Since it was expected that Hivos funding would cover most Phase II activities, this meant that Phase II needed to be radically modified. Bellanet Africa and the Harambee Coordination Committee decided that it would be best to use the remaining funds for an output oriented activity, thus the workshop. With input from the Coordination Committee, Bellanet Africa developed a workshop proposal for submission to IDRC.

The main rationale for the workshop was the felt need to capture and consolidate the experiences and learnings from the implementation of the project. These experiences and learnings will be documented and disseminated for the benefit of knowledge sharing networks in Africa. There was also a felt need, by Bellanet Africa, to charter a way forward for the future of the project which has been fully reliant on donor funding.

Workshop theme

The theme of the workshop was: "A stop on the Harambee Safari: achievements, challenges, learnings and opportunities". Safari being a Swahili word meaning 'long journey', that aptly depicts the Harambee experience.
