Participants review of training
From Harambee Wiki
[edit]
What I liked
- Learned something valuable and looking forward to future
- Liked different ideas and techniques in stories
- Able to express messages big time with digital stories
- Within a very short time you can get an idea, access and share knowledge
- Training schedule – within 24 hours we had products and new skills
- Training atmosphere/environment was conducive to learning
- Ongoing translation for the Francophone participants
- Discovered something new on my computer (thought i knew it all)
- Discovered new, easy to use tools
- Small group which created a kind of intimacy
- Training style made it easy for everyone to do a digital story
- Top quality outputs produced quickly and safely
- Short time requested to make a video
- Riff took us where he wanted to go, but in a nice way (this was termed "facipulation")
- Viewing movies from previous workshops at the beginning which was encouraging
- Trainers were not tough
- Training was participatory
- Emphasis on “I” (telling the story from a personal perspective)
- Time constraint; it forced us to move quickly and solve problems
- Everything
- Availability of organizing committee
- Although the trainers could not communicate in French, the francophones produced excellent stories
- Initially confused, then excited to produce something and have a very good communication/knowledge sharing tool
- New skills can be shared with others
- Training approach was very tactical. Explanations were very short and most time allocated to hands-on work and coaching
- Liked simplicity and easy going facilitation
- People had fun
- Seeing everyone’s movies
- Everyone helped each other
- People were willing to experiment
- Able to finish on time
- Great to see motivation and commitment
[edit]
What I did not like
- Moviemaker was frustrating (hanging, reboot, e.t.c)
- Poor location of facilities (log to far away)
- Time so short
- Pity that sound quality was not so good in some cases
- Not enough info about image quality
- Did not use storyboard form
- No opportunity to talk/think about political choices we are making as we build stories
- Didn’t work together online in advance
- Could not point to flickr for some photos
- The language support for Francophones was not planned for from the start e.g if Francois had not been here, Victorine would not have done anything. [Coordination Committee note: There were 4 bi-lingual participants]
[edit]
What i would do differently the next time
- Pay more attention to ensure sound quality
- Increase attention to picture quality i.e provide guidelines on appropriate picture size, resolution etc
- Raise copyright issues at the beginning so peoples can chose content accordingly
- Emphasize need to frequently save work
- Possibly provide sources of copyright-free content
- Not record directly into Windows Movie Maker
- Prepare more online (pre-workshop briefings)
