Harambee KS Workshop proposal
Introduction
The Harambee Project was set up to strengthen networks in Africa through use of collaborative processes and technologies for knowledge sharing. In its two implementation phases, the project was involved in supporting network coordinators in the design and implementation of network strengthening activities, developing capacities related to network coordination as well as identifying and filling gaps in existing training and research-oriented resources on knowledge and ICTs.
Rationale
A second workshop for Harambee was not originally one of the planned activities for Phase II of the project. It arose from the decision by Hivos, one of Harambee’s funders, not to fund Phase II of the project. Since it was expected that Hivos funding would cover most Phase II activities, this meant that Phase II needed to be radically modified. Bellanet Africa and the Harambee Coordination Committee decided that it would be best to use the remaining funds for an output oriented activity, thus the workshop.
As Phase 2 of the Project comes to a close there is a felt need to capture and consolidate the experiences and learnings from the implementation of the two-year project. These experiences and learnings will be documented and disseminated for the benefit of similar knowledge sharing networks in Africa.
There is also a felt need, by Bellanet Africa, to charter a way forward for the future of the project which has been fully reliant on donor funding. The workshop will therefore serve as a platform to develop an exit or continuity strategy for the project. It is for the above reasons that Bellanet Africa and the Harambee Coordination Committee propose to host a four day face-to-face Knowledge Sharing workshop.
Workshop theme
"A stop on the Harambee Safari: achievements, challenges, learnings and opportunities"
Workshop location and date:
Venue: Protea Hotel Kampala, Uganda
Date: 14-17th January 2008
Workshop Objectives
- To consolidate learning from the Harambee partners
- To feed the Harambee experience into the project research
- To communicate the network stories
- To map the future of Harambee
See the workshop Draft agenda
Workshop Participants
The workshop will bring together about 22 participants who will include network coordinators from Harambee and other networks in Africa, the Harambee Coordination Committee, and resource persons who will contribute especially to discussions on the future of the project.
There will be a total of 22 participants including:
- Harambee Focus Network coordinators
- Harambee Small Grants recipients
- Harambee Coordination Committee
- Other knowledge sharing networks in Africa
- Resource persons
- Researchers
- Trainers (Digital Storytelling)
There are a limited number of places for network coordinators therefore interested persons will have to fill out a workshop application form. Participants will then be selected based on criteria set by the Coordination Committee.
Selection criteria for networks
The Harambee Coordination Committee will make every effort to ensure sectoral and geographical diversity as much as possible in selection of participating networks.
Expected outcomes/expectations
- Increased capacity of network coordinators in the use of technology to support knowledge sharing
- Documentation of good and bad practices in the use of collaborative tools and processes for knowledge sharing in networks
- Development of a conception of future potential of the Harambee Community
Workshop documentation
Documentation of the planning and implementation of the workshop will take place mostly online on the Harambee website[1] and wiki [2]
